Facilities: US synchrotron on target

US condensed matter physicists and materials researchers received a boost at the end of March when the Advanced Photon Source produced its first light. Experiments at the $467m synchrotron radiation source, sited at the Argonne National Laboratory near Chicago, will begin in September. A further $200m has been invested by university groups, industry and national labs in experimental beam-lines at the source.
