Regeneration of Plants from Potato Protoplasts

In 1970 Nagata and Takebe succeeded in developing a method for culturing protoplasts of tobacco cells, producing shoots and eventually new plants. Their breakthrough generated wide interest, for there were a number of things that plant geneticists and breeders hoped to do with protoplasts that opened new pathways for research and development.
