Working Group 1: Total, Near-UV (λ > 300 nm), Visible and Infrared Spectral Irradiance

1998
Working Group I, as part of the Solar Electromagnetic Radiation Study for Solar Cycle 22 (SOLERS22), concentrates on the spectral range in the near-UV, visible, and infrared wavelengths of the solar epectrum, in addition to the solar total irradiance. This group has several goals: (1) define a reference spectrum for wavelengths greater than 300 nm (2) monitor solar total, near-UV, visible, and infrared irradiances, (3) compare the irradiance values to spatially resolved data to better understand the underlying physical mechanisms of irradiance variability, (4) the theoretical interpretation of irradiance variations, and (5) develop long-term irradiance models to clarify the role of solar variability in climate changes. This report summarizes the progress in the last few years on these research goals, the state of recent observations in WG1 wavelength range, and our objectives to be attained by the end of 1997.
