Oral History Interview: Virginia Hinshaw (0941)

Abstract: In her two 2009 interviews with Charles Read and Marita Weiss, Virginia Hinshaw reviews her time at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, roughly for the 1980s and 1990s. She offers some background information on her development as a scientist and an administrator, but focuses on her roles as a virologist, a teacher, and a dean of the Graduate School. In connection with this, she discusses her ideas about good teaching, her knowledge of various departmental and administrative personalities, issues she dealt with as the Dean of the Graduate School, and why she made the transition to becoming Provost of UC-Davis and the Chancellor of the University of Hawaii. This interview was conducted for inclusion into the UW-Madison Oral History Program.
