Polymeric blends as EMI shielding materials

2020
Abstract The possibility of using polymer blends as electromagnetic interference (EM) shielding materials has been explored intensively in the past decade. The need arises from the rapid advancement in technology, which demands new materials for design. In this chapter, a brief review of polymer blends is carried out with an emphasis on structure-property relationships. A brief theoretical background of EM shielding effectiveness (SE) and mechanisms is given in the chapter. Further, a review of conducting polymer blends, polymer blends containing micron- and nanosized fillers as EMI shielding materials is conducted in detail. The chapter investigates the development of blend morphology, dispersion/localization of micro/nanofillers in blend matrix, and its influence on EMI-SE. Additionally, the modification of micro/nanofillers and its influence on EMI-SE of polymer blends are discussed. The mechanisms involved in enhancing the EMI-SE of polymer blends are also explained.
