Reflection-loss reduction of dielectric plate by reflection-phase control of Frequency Selective Surface

Electromagnetic waves penetrate window glasses, radomes and cases of electric devices for wireless systems. The thickness of the dielectric plate is a similar dimension to the wavelength in high-frequency band. The reflections from the surfaces of the dielectric plate are canceled out of phase only when the thickness is identical to a half wavelength. However, they are not a half in general, then, reflection loss remains. A Frequency Selective Surface (FSS) is equipped on one surface of the dielectric plate. The reflection phase of the FSS plane can be controlled by the FSS geometry. The FSS is designed so that the reflection from the other surface of the dielectric is canceled by the reflection from the FSS plane, even though the thickness of the dielectric is not identical to a half of the wavelength. The reflection and transmission characteristics of the dielectric plate with FSS are demonstrated in this paper. The feasibility of the analysis calculating from the individual scattering matrices of the dielectric surfaces, the dielectric medias and the FSS surface of the laminated glass is investigated in comparison with the electromagnetic analysis.
