The problems associated with the identification of density dependence in population data
1998
Density dependence occurs when the per capita growth rate of a population depends on its own density. This symposium defines direct density dependence as a decrease in the rate of population growth as population density increases, brought about by either a proportional increase in mortality and/or emigration, or a decrease in fecundity and/or immigration (as distinct from inverse and delayed responses).
