The Feasibility of a Single Discrepancy Reporting System

1991
Abstract : The Department of Defense acquires, manages, issues, and transports an immense amount of materiel each year. Discrepancy reporting is the process of identifying and resolving problems with that materiel. Currently, discrepancy reports are processed in a predominately manual environment and are implemented under separate joint regulations. This report evaluates the feasibility of consolidating the discrepancy reporting into a standard set of procedures and integrating the automation of discrepancy reporting. The report makes recommendations on improving discrepancy reporting, whereby DoD can improve materiel availability. product quality, and service to operating units. Further, implementation of the recommendations can result in net direct cost savings of $12.8 million over 8 years.
