Structural studies of liquid 2-bromopropane and 2-chloropropane by neutron diffraction

1994
The structures of fully deuterated liquid 2-bromopropane and 2-chloropropane have been investigated by neutron diffraction. Four different temperatures were employed and a separation of 2-bromopropane into an intramolecular and an intermolecular form factor was made. An increase in the intensity of the main peak in S M(Q) with increasing temperature was observed. Two qualitative interpretations of this behaviour in terms of density change of the liquids are given. A comparison with the structure of liquid isopropanol is included.
