A 1 Gbps UWB OOK Receiver with Double PLL All-Digital CDR and Data Packet Re-Synchronizer

2018
This paper presents an IR-UWB non-coherent receiver for in-vivo neural recording applications capable of receiving a continuous OOK pulse stream at 1 Gbps and 4 GHz center frequency. An asynchronous threshold energy detector recovers the transmitter clock with a double PLL-driven all-digital CDR and packet re-synchronizer that automatically detect packets with a data-aided mechanism. A prototype, integrated in a 130 nm CMOS technology occupies an active area of 0.34 mm 2 , operates at 1.2 V supply, recovers synchronization errors in 30 ns, and it is fully driven by a single 31.25 MHz reference crystal. The complete system, including I/O output buffers and driver logic operating at 1 GHz on a 50 Ω load, crystal oscillator, and complete RF front-end and baseband, consumes a measured power consumption of 115 mW. This paper presents preliminary measurement results obtained in an office/laboratory environment, demonstrating sub-meter over-the-air transmission at 1 Gbps with an integrated transmitter in absence of RF filters for a 4.4 · 10 −3 packet error rate and 3 · 10 −3 synchronization error rate performance.
