Process for preparing isoxazoles of the formula I wherein the substituents have the following meanings: n is 0, 1 or 2; R1, R2 alkyl having 1 to 6 carbon atoms; R3, R4, R5 hydrogen, alkyl having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, particularly methyl, or R4 and R5 together form a bond; R6Cl, Br, subsequent embodiment comprising the method steps a) - c): a) halogenation of a 1, 2-dialkylbenzene of the formula II in which the radicals R1 can be identical or different respectively and have the above meaning, with halogens, particularly chlorine or bromine, to give 3, 6-dihalogen-1m2-dialkylbenzenes of the formula III b) reaction of a 3, 6-dihalogen-1, 2-dialkylbenzene of the formula III with hydroperoxide and an agent halogenation, preferably HBr, to give the benzyl halides, especially benzyl bromides of the formula IV in which the radicals R 1 and R 6 have the abovementioned meaning; c) oxidation of benzyl bromide of formula IV with an oxidizing agent to give aldehydes of the formula V in which R1 and R6 substituents have the abovementioned meaning.
