free of disease at the last follow-up. There was no statistically significant difference between the patients with viable carcinoma in the SND specimen and those without. Conclusions: Eighteen percent of pretreatment Npositive patients receiving nonsurgical therapy for HNSCC required SND in our patient population, but 44% of patients with pretreatment N3 neck disease required SND. Although 19% of specimens contained active disease at the time of SND, this finding had no significant effect on disease outcome.
