Angiolipoma of the breast: sonographic appearance of two cases.

1998
A 70 year old black woman was referred for hook-wire localization and excisional biopsy of a nonpalpable left breast mass. An outside mammogram had shown a poorly defined 1.5 cm nodular density in the lower inner quadrant (Fig. 1). Ultrasonography with a 7 MHz transducer was employed for guidance of hook-wire placement. A 1.3 × 1.3 × 0.8 cm well-circumscribed mass was found, hyperechoic compared to adjacent breast, and without posterior acoustic enhancement (Fig. 2). Biopsy proceeded because of the suggestive mammographic appearance. A postlocalization mammogram confirmed that the hook-wire apparatus traversed the mass. A specimen radiograph showed that the mass had been excised. The pathologist described a soft, pink-tan, circumscribed, rounded mass that consisted of mature adipose tissue containing a branching vascular network and benign spindle cells. Angiolipoma was the final diagnosis.
