The Gender Discourse of Intellectuals and Its Social,Cultural Meaning from Late-Qing Dynasty to the May 4th Movement

2007
From a gender perspective, this paper reveals the relationship between women and Chinese modernity by studying how the image of women was constructed in this period from late-Qing Dynasty to the May 4th Movement. It aims to analyze the discourse on women's movement and to reflect women's history from a gender perspective. This paper considers that changes in "gender" discourse not only mean changes in women's social status in words and cultural expressions but also relate to the fact that women entered into the discourse of intellectual discussions and the construction of a modern state.Nationalism has always been a concern in gender discourse.Changes in women's image also related to a crisis in identity among elite intellectuals.Any change in "gender" discourse find roots in cultural processes.
