The cholinergic hypothesis of memory disorders (Bartus et al., 1982) provides a rationale for the development of drugs for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). A decline in nicotinic (Nordberg and Winblad, 1986) and muscarinic (Mash etal., 1985) cholinergic receptors has been described in studies of postmortem brain material from AD patients.
