Synthesis and structural study of the phase CdLaBaCu3Ox

Synthesis of a 123 phase containing Cd at the Y site is attempted. It is demonstrated that Cd behaves like Ca, occupying the Y site. As in the case of the Ca-La-Ba-Cu-O system, a stock with Cd : Ba : La : Cu = 1 : 1 : 1 :3 gives a tetragonal phase (a = b = 0.3886(3) nm, c = 1.1693(8) nm), whose composition is close to (Cd 0 . 5 La 0 . 5 )(Ba 1 . 2 5 La 0 . 7 5 )Cu 3 O y . Since cadmium, unlike calcium, does not form a mixed oxide with copper, the overstoichiometric cadmium and copper oxides present in the stock remain in the product as impurity phases. Compared to the calcium phase, the cadmium phase forms at a temperature ∼100°C lower.
