Varna to Jati: An Overview of Caste System in Hinduism

2018
The strongest argument in the favour of caste is that it maintains the division of labour. But the strategy of arranging all occupations in a hierarchical manner over the name of varna originated jati in Indian society. The caste system creates an unparalleled and prejudiced picture of Modern India before the world. The description of varna in various Hindu scriptures put altogether different image from what Buddhist and Jain literature depict a portrait of ancient India. There is considerable gap in their information. It means the real nature of society was different to what is described in religious books and the historical inscriptions are also contradictory to Hindu scriptures. It seems that the Hindu scriptures were just to create an ideal form that what and how should be a good society. There is a great possibility that such description about varna system could mere be a Brahmanical narrative and it was not a real picture of society. As today, the provisions are made for dalits in the Constitution of India appears bogus to what really is happening with dalits in Indian society.
