Airport Owners Raise Red Flag on 'Green' Movement Lapse
2006
This article discusses the desire of airport operators to receive official environmentally sustainable ratings by the US federal government. Specifically, such ratings are already conducted through the U.S. Green Building Council under its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program, which would, through the proposal by the airport operators in question, extend to non-building structures such as runways. Most of the weight for this proposal has been provided by the O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, as its $15.5 billion master plan incorporates advice from its Sustainable Design Manual, an incorporation that the airport hopes will warrant official designation. Some examples of rules that must be modified for airport structures include credit for distance from population centers as well as the use of light-emitting diodes (LED) in runway signalization.
