This paper analyzes the basic sanitation infrastructure indicators in the cities of the Metropolitan Area of Porto Alegre between 2000 and 2013, investigating the universal service, the service capacity of water and sewage systems, the investments made by operators and other indicators, taking into account the importance of this infrastructure for environmental health. The paper examines the results of government policies and reveals that the sewage systems of the municipalities were ranked as a priority for the allocation of new investments, and points out that there is a high deficit of sewage services in the region. It also alerts to the seriousness of dumping polluted water directly into rivers and Lake Guaiba.
