GIS for Site Selection for Hazardous Waste Landfills

2012
Site selection is one of the crucial steps in waste management and the process of site selection involves a large number of calculations and logistic decisions. An inappropriate landfill site may have negative environmental, economic and ecological impacts. Therefore, it should be selected carefully by considering both regulations and constraints. In this study, a methodology for site selection for hazardous waste landfill for the Allahabad city is provided using the geographic information system (GIS). For the purpose of site selection, a search area outside the Allahabad city was identified by considering a region between two ellipses which are at a distance of 8.4 km and 9.4 km from the center of the city. The result shows that there are 10 candidate sites from which the best is chosen after site ranking by using overlaying techniques of GIS. The site selection criterion is made as per the guidelines provided by the Central Pollution Control Board, Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India.
