Internet of things-enabled virtual environment for U-health monitoring

Abstract Technological advancements in the Internet of things (IoT) have allowed for the ubiquitous monitoring of health. Remote monitoring of an individual’s health is possible in today’s world with a combination of wearable sensors and a cloud platform where the data measured from the sensors are accessible around the clock. The advancements in the IoT field have filled the gap between sensor data and data networks. There are many open-source cloud takeaways that can be used as IoT platforms for remote health monitoring. Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT), ThingSpeak, and Thinger.io are but a few IoT platforms that can be used as data networks for uploading sensor data. Time stamping of data to be uploaded allows real-time tracking of the health of any individual from anywhere in the world. This chapter is dedicated to the introduction of such IoT platforms, their technical insight, and real-time implementation. We focus on MQTT platforms using Raspberry Pi (RPi) microcontrollers and provide all the necessary insights required to bridge the gap between sensor data and data networks using MQTT.
