Quasi-deuteron production by γ-rays in 4He

Abstract The total cross section for direct absorption of γ-rays by neutron-proton pairs is evaluated for helium on the assumption of shell-model initial-state wave functions. Electric dipole and quadrupole as well as magnetic dipole transitions are taken into account. The results are compared with the corresponding experimental cross section.
