An ergonomic aspect of substituting solvent-based glue in the upholstered furniture industry

2001
The management of an upholstered furniture factory substituted its solvent-based glue with a water-based form to decrease the risk of fire and occupational hygienic hazards. Because the work method and spray-gun were also changed, the ergonomic conditions of the work process were also assessed. Six experienced female sprayers sprayed water-based and solvent-based glue during the manufacture of a seat cushion. The EMG (electromyography) activity of eight muscles was measured. The load of these muscles was greater during the use of the water-based spraying method and therefore indicated an increase in biomechanical load in the forearm and neck-shoulder region. In conclusion, the choice of the means of substitution should be based on an analysis that takes into consideration the risks related to occupational hygienic, safety, ergonomic, fire and environmental factors.
