Sexual and Reproductive Health: Overview

The concept of sexual and reproductive health has evolved to offer a comprehensive and integrated approach to health needs related to sexuality and reproduction. Sexual and reproductive health is a public health concern, a human rights issue, and is essential for attaining Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The global situation of sexual and reproductive health shows glaring inequities between developed and developing regions. Although a concern for both women and men, women bear the major share of the burden of sexual and reproductive ill health. Interventions beyond the health sector are needed, together with an integrated package of interdependent and interrelated health service components.
