Study of the failure surface for embrittled VT5 alloy

1. Failure of alloy VT5 both in the embrittled and in the ductile conditions is intragranular and it proceeds along accumulations of carbide and carbonitride precipitates, and also through zones enriched in aluminum. 2. Embrittlement of alloy VT5 is mainly connected with redistribution of aluminum within the body of grains during heat and thermomechanical treatment, leading to formation of clusters of solid solution based on the compound TixAl (x≤1) whose amount depends on the original aluminum content in the alloy.
