Improving the Quality of Teaching

One of the strong predictors of positive student experience is quality of teaching delivered by academic staff. Qualitative data on student feedback highlights the importance of quality teaching, knowledge of the teaching staff, and their genuine commitment to actively engage students in learning. Improving the quality of teaching requires teaching staff to use student feedback and other performance measures to raise standards of teaching. It also requires teaching staff to effectively use learning technologies to support all cohorts of students. This chapter will outline how institutions are actively using student feedback to improve the quality of teaching. It will also discuss how institutional policies and practices are driving improvements in teaching, professional developments, and learning and teaching scholarship. The chapter concludes with a number of recommendations for faculty and administrators to actively use student feedback to improve the quality of teaching.
