Pharmacognostical, Preliminary Phytochemical and Hepatoprotective studies on Phyllanthus maderaspatensis (L)

2014
The objective of this research work is to evaluate in detail the Hepatoprotective activity of different lead extracts of Phyllanthus maderaspatensis. The whole plant was shade dried, size reduced and macerated with Hexane, Ethanol, Chloroform and Aqueous solvents. The potency of Ethanol and Aqueous extracts was compared with standard drug like Silymarin for hepatoprotectivity. Initially Pharmacognostic and Phytochemical studies were done on Phyllanthus maderaspatensis. For Hepatoprotective evaluation albino rats of either sex were taken in seven groups of four each. First group was treated with normal saline. Second group is treated with Paracetamol (3gm/kg) orally. Third to seventh groups were treated initially with Paracetamol (3gm/kg, p.o), followed by Silymarin (50mg/kg, p.o), Aqueous extract (50mg/kg, p.o), Aqueous extract (300mg/kg, p.o), Ethanol extract (50mg/kg, p.o) and Ethanol extract (300mg/kg, p.o) respectively. Then the blood of these rats is collected from retro orbital sinus and then the serum was used for the assay of marker enzymes. Finally rats were sacrificed and livers were removed and sent for histopathological studies.
