Thermal oxidation of aromatic polyamides (r)

The behaviour of aromatic polyamides and model compounds in the range 250 to 400°C is investigated. It is shown that the initial step of oxidation depends upon the presence of amide groups in the polymer chain. The oxidation of the aromatic rings of the polymers passes through the stage of quinoid structure formation and subsequent oxidation results in chain scission and release of oxidation products. A scheme for the oxidation process of aromatic polyamides is suggested. Das Verhalten aromatischer Polyamide und Modellverbindungen wahrend der Thermooxidation bei 250 bis 400°C wird untersucht. Der Verlauf des Anfangsstadiums der Oxidation aromatischer Polyamide wird durch die Gegenwart von Amidgruppierungen in der Makrokette bestimmt. Die Oxidation des aromatischen Teils der Polymere erfolgt uber die Bildung einer Chinoidstruktur, deren weitere Oxidation schlieslich zur Spaltung der Makrokette und zur Freisetzung der Oxidationsprodukte fuhrt. Ein Schema fur den prinzipiellen Ablauf der oxidativen Prozesse in aromatischen Polyamiden wird vorgeschlagen.
