The content of Iron Metabolism: An International Symposium , is the collection of presentations from 58 participants representing France, Switzerland, the British Empire, USA, Japan, Italy, Argentina, Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Denmark. The symposium was sponsored by the CIBA Foundation and held in Paris, France, July 1963. To list the contributors would be to list most of the world authorities on the broad subject of iron metabolism. The objectives of the symposium as set forth in the preface were to concentrate all knowledge of iron metabolism at one assembly, and, to promote understanding in a field where CIBA has special interest. In this instance the driving force was the drug Desferrioxamine (Desferal —CIBA), a new iron chelating agent. Only a small proportion of the conference was devoted specifically to the drug although the opportunity for the participants to compare notes, so's to speak, regarding the then limited clinical use of
