Subacute Phase of Stroke Treated with Ganglioside GM1

Various effects of treatment with GM1 ganglioside were shown: a) enhancement of neuronal sprouting and neuritogenesis (potentiating the effects of trophic factors) (Cotman et al., 1981; Gorio et al., 1980; Wojcik et al., 1982; Toffano et al., 1983; Ferrari et al., 1983); b) functional recovery of dopaminergic and cholinergic activity after lesion (Toffano et al., 1983); c) reduction of cerebral edema (Karpiak, 1983); d) prevention of progressive neural damage following trauma by means of complex intracellular mechanisms (activation of membrane bound enzymes) (Seifert, 1981).
