Developing a Management Package for Rutherglen Bug in Sorghum

2010
The management of Rutherglen bug (Nysius vinitor) (RGB) has emerged as a concern for growers and agronomists in the past 2-3 seasons. Until recently, there had been no research on RGB damage potential in sorghum, perhaps because RGB has generally been controlled incidentally by midge sprays. Preliminary research has demonstrated the damage potential of RGB in sorghum and also resulted in working thresholds to guide management decisions. During early stages of grain development RGB feed directly on grain, impacting on grain size and quality. Feeding wounds allow entry by bacteria and fungi, further discolouring and deteriorating the grain. Validation of the thresholds is required before recommendations can be finalised.
