RAMP METERING CONTROL IN THE NETHERLANDS

1990
Surveys conducted on the performance and effectiveness of the first metering scheme on motorway access ramps in the Netherlands showed improvements in traffic operations on the motorway. The number of 'rat runners' decreased dramatically, the travel time from the ramps along the A10 decreased, the speed in front of a tunnel increased, and there is no longer a delay for public transport travelling along the S101 ramp. Driver compliance with the ramp signals has been very good, with no more than 2 to 5% violations of the red 'stop' signal. No enforcement has been necessary.
