Canine demodicosis and its therapeutic management - a report of 24 cases.

Out of forty nine clinical cases of canine dermatitis presented, 24 (48.98%) cases between age groups of 2 months to 11 years were diagnosed positive for Demodex canis based on microscopic examination. Clinical examination showed persistent itching, alopecia, erythematous or papular lesions all over body surface. Treatment was instituted with benzyl peroxide shampoo applied externally at weekly interval for 3 to 5 times, Amitraz rinse weekly interval for 3 to 5 times and Cefpodoxime orally @ 5 mg/kg b wt od for 7 to 10 days along with herbal immuno-stimulator 10 ml bid po for 21 days. Out of 24 cases, 20 cases responded and their skin scrapings were negative for Demodex spp. after 3 weeks of treatment.
