HIV-associated lung cancer in the era of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART): Correlation between CD4 count and outcome.
2010
7632 Background: Lung cancer, the most common non-AIDS defining solid organ malignancy, is associated with poor overall outcomes. Yet, the availability of HAART therapy has resulted in significant improvements in HIV disease outcomes. Methods: All pts diagnosed with lung cancer in the Emory University Healthcare System during the HAART era (1995-2008) were included in this analysis. Individual pt charts were reviewed for clinical data. CD4 count at diagnosis was treated as a continuous variable and also dichotomized into a binary variable with 3 different cutoff points (50, 200, and 500). The Pearson's correlation coefficients were estimated for each pair of covariates studied. The Kaplan-Meier method was used for survival analysis. Results: 80 pts were identified for this analysis of which 73 had NSCLC. Pt baseline characteristics were: median age-52 yrs; male-80%; African American-84%; injection drug use-25%; homosexual/bisexual-33%; adenocarcinoma-41%; squamous-32%, and NSCLC-NOS-27%. All pts were smok...
