BIBLIOGRAPHY of Hungarian Writings on English Literature, 1957—1960

The present bibliography covers Hungarian essays, critical articles, book-reviews etc. dealing with the literary works, events and personalities of the English-speaking countries, published in the Hungarian periodical press in the years 1957-1900. The scope of this bibliography is restricted in several respects. First, it comprises only that material which is to be found in the more important Hungarian periodicals and in two nationally read daily newspapers, all of them published in Hungary. Only publications with serious literary or scholarly pretensions have been considered. Secondly, only articles, reviews, critiques of substance and importance have been listed, omitting the brief paragraphs of news or gossip columns, announcements of forthcoming books and similar trivia and ephemera. Thirdly, critical material published in book form (e.g. scholarly monographs, collections of essays and studies, critical introductions or prefaces to translations of English, British, American, Australian, Indian, South African etc. literary works) has been excluded. Fourthly, the translations into Hungarian of literary works originally written in English and published either in Hungarian periodicals or in book form (poems, stories, essays, novels or parts of them, dramatic works, etc.) have been excluded for lack of space. Under eacli year articles, studios and reviews dealing with English (American etc.) literary works or with authors writing in English are presented first under the names of the authors arranged in aphabetical order. Following this, miscellaneous and moro goneral articles are registered in the second section of the yearly bibliography, under the name and in the alphabetical order of the Hungarian critics or scholars.
