HERRINGBONE BUCKLING OF COLD ROLLED STRIP

2010
The herringbone buckling(double rib buckling) of strips is a kind of serious flatness defect, but little is known about its mechanism of production.A new explanation about herringbone buckling is proposed in this paper.Based on Airy stress function and S.Timoshenko's principle of least work,a new mechanical model of herringbone buckling is established, and the prebuckling stress field in the strip is obtained. The critical buckling stress is also obtained by Galerkin's principle of virtual displacement. The post-buckling modal shape is obtained with perturbation-variational solution, and is in good agreement with the buckling mode obtained by finite element method. The results of the analysis could be used in prediction of herringbone buckling and its angle of inclination on a strip rolling line.
