HIV/STD related knowledge and sexual behaviors among STD clinic attendees in Zhejiang province

Objective To explore the HIV/STD related knowledge level among STD clinic attendees and the association between HIV/STD knowledge and sexual behaviors.Methods A questionnaire survey on HIV/STD related knowledge,sexual behaviors and risk awareness was conducted among attendees of 4 STD clinics in Zhejiang province,October-December,2007.The HIV/STD knowledge and the association between HIV/STD knowledge and behaviors were analyzed using univariate and multivariate analyses.Results The proportions of correct answers to questions concerning HIV and STD knowledge were 53.0%-64.8%,30.2%-45.5% in males and 43.8%-58.8%,29.7%-36.6% in females,respectively.Higher HIV/STD related knowledge was associated with ever condom use,and receiving HIV antibody testing during the recent half year.Conclusion The HIV/STD related knowledge should be promoted in STD clinic attendees.It is necessary to conduct HIV/STD related health education among this population to enhance their knowledge level,promote the receiving of HIV antibody testing and reduce the risk behaviors.
