2004
Severe traumatic brain injury is one of the challenges many clinical and health professionals are faced with nowadays. Due to advances in medicine, the number of patients who survive this type of injury is on the rise. A comprehensive study of these injuries requires a multidisciplinary approach and the use of valid methodologies. In this paper the anatomical distribution of 8 patients who suffered severe alteration in their levels of consciousness were described. In order to detect the type and quantity of the injuries suffered by these patients, the following was analyzed: the TC carried out upon arrival at the Intensive Care Unit; the worst TC reading during the hospital stay; and where possible the results of the MR. In this study a relationship was established between the patient injuries and the severity of brain damage they suffered. Key Words: Traumatic brain injury, alteration in the level of consciousness, neuro-imaging techniques, clinical cases.
