WiMAX Communication Technology Tests for evaluation as Media Transport for GOOSE Messages in Energy Distribution Networks

2019
This article will discuss how to obtain high-speed detection, isolation and fault restoration in distribution networks using, as the communication media, a wireless multiservice WiMAX network. All the message exchanges, packet prioritization, and service isolation sequences will be addressed in order to meet the maximum performance requirements of IEC 61850. Intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) are used to simulate switching points along a distribution line, with the objective of determining the transmission and reception times of the object-oriented peer-to-peer (GOOSE) messages, via WiMAX wireless network for the restoration decision. This work investigates radio resources and the classification and prioritization of services for machine-to-machine (M2M) traffic through a multi-service WiMAX network. It also proposes scheduling configuration of QoS to meet other network services such as smart metering and mobility of service cars. Simulations were conducted using real equipment in a controlled environment. The initial results indicate that it is possible to transmit isolation and restoration information within an acceptable delay limit.
