Towards Dual Mode Secure Navigation Using the Galileo Public Regulated Service (PRS) and PGS Precise Positioning Service (PPS

2016
The use of accurate Position, Navigation and Timing (PNT) information is critical to successful mission delivery for global militaries. The cornerstone technology for PNT within the military is Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). To ensure continuous availability of PNT, mission critical applications will, where allowed, use signals designed to be robust in the presence of jamming and interference. For GPS users, this means GPS-PPS (either P(Y) code or the new M-Code). In Europe, the new Galileo GNSS will provide PRS for a similar purpose, albeit it is primarily a civil system which may be exploited by authorised military users. For those with access to both GPS-PPS and PRS, resilience can be increased further by combining the information from the two services into a single PNT solution. In this paper we describe the UK programme to develop a dual mode GPS-Precise Positioning Service (PPS) + GAL-PRS receiver, the architecture, the challenges and some initial results.
