The purpose of this study was to describe the existence of Maleo birds, describe the perceptions and preferences of the community and formulate a strategy for the conservation Of Maleo birds in Pinjan Tanjung Matop Wildlife Reserve. The research was conducted for 3 (three) months, from September to November 2016 at Pinjan Tanjung Matop Wildlife Reserve, Tolitoli District. Research used observation methods, surveys and interviews with a descriptive approach. The retrieval of Maleo bird population data using the concentration count method, while for the habitat of the Maleo bird is done by looking at the conditions of the nesting field and the types of trees that become Maleo bird feed sources. Data on community perceptions were carried out through interviews using questionnaires aimed at the community around Pinjan Tanjung Matop Wildlife Reserve. Data were analyzed descriptively and SWOT to develop strategies for the conservation of Maleo birds in Pinjan Tanjung Matop Wildlife Reserve. The results showed Maleo bird population was 26 or 13 pairs with the number of eggs transferred to hatching cages as many as 842 eggs and hatched as many as 742 birds and released to nature as much as 554 until October 2016. The habitat of Maleo birds in Pinjan Tanjung Matop Wildlife Reserve was dominated by a combination of coastal forest and lowland tropical forest, there are several types of vegetation that source of food for the Maleo bird, including Aleurites moluccana, Ficus sp, Dracontomelon mangiferum and Pometia pinnata. Community perceptions that strongly agree if Maleo are 91.89% used as an object and attraction for natural tourism in Pinjan Tanjung Matop Wildlife Reserve. The results of an analysis of the external and internal factors of Maleo bird conservation in Pinjan Tanjung Matop Wildlife Reserve are carried out through priority strategies, namely: a) optimizing Maleo bird habitat development activities, b) the need for more strict rules / witnesses against acts of forest destruction, c) increase partnership with local institutions in program implementation and d) active community participation with the Forestry Police in safeguarding the forest. While alternative strategies that can be carried out together with priority strategies to increase population include: a) division of work areas into management blocks, b) increased collaboration between stakeholders, c) improvement of community resources around the area, d) dissemination of the status and function of the region and e) improvement and development of infrastructure facilities.
