El enfrentamiento entre las dos monarquias borbonicas se dio por las diferencias entre Felipe V y su tio el duque de Orleans, regente de Francia tras la muerte de Luis XIV. La invasion francesa amenazo al gobierno espanol en la frontera mediante insurrecciones en las provincias vascas y Cataluna, pero la mayor parte de la poblacion, incluido el reino de Navarra, se mantuvo leal. The French invasion threatened the Spanish control over the border regions with uprisings in Catalonia and the Basque Provinces. However, most of the population, including the Kingdom of Navarre, stayed loyal.
