Diagnosis and treatment of post-pill amenorrhea.

1980
Reported incidence rate of postpill amenorrhea range from 0.4% to 2.4%. Postpill amenorrhea with or without galactorrhea may be the result of several causes of secondary amenorrhea such as menopause pituitary tumor excess of gonadotropins hypothyroidism pituitary or hypothalamic insufficiency. Diagnostic tests and provocative tests are necessary to find out the causes of amenorrhea and especially to rule out the presence of pituitary tumor. Treatment for amenorrhea is not required unless pregnancy is desired. Administration of clomiphene citrate is the treatment of choice; if unsuccessful administration of menotropins may be effective although it is often associated with the possibility of multiple pregnancy. Bromo-ergocriptine is also highly successful in inducing ovulation in women with hyperprolactinemia.
