Continuously quantifying method and apparatus lubricating oil consumption of the internal combustion engine

2003
The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for continuously quantifying the lubricating oil consumption of the internal combustion engine. The method of the present invention, the a step of placing the amounts specified the at least one radioactive tracer in the lubricating oil to measure the consumption, the amount of radioactive tracer present in the gas discharged from the engine (2) and a step of measuring downstream of the engine. According to the present invention, the amount of lubricating oil radiotracer present in the gas discharged from the engine (2) is determined as follows. The trap (7) capable of grasping the particles of radioactive tracer physically contacting the gas. Radiation from the trap is measured with a good sensitivity detector to the radiation emitted from the captured radiotracer (10). The measurements obtained from the detector (10) is transmitted to the programmable computer capable of converting the measured values into the lubricating oil consumption ratio of the engine.
