Development of a polar magnetic substorm current system

Evidence is presented illustrating the westward motion of the magnetic perturbation pattern of polar magnetic substorms during the course of these events. This motion is related to the lengthening of the ionospheric part of the substorm current system and the motion of the westward-traveling surge.
