Man or machine: Which is more important? Although the mass-production systems of the past required the obedience of people to the demands of technology, today's information-based organizations use technology as a tool for developing expertise. This paradigm shift requires a redefinition of the role of technology and the role of the people who use it, for only through a partnership of capital and skill can organizations achieve the value-added component of modern work.
