Pharmacokinetics of borneol of new Xing Nao Jing in rats after intranasal and intravenous administration

2012
Objective:To investigate the pharmacokinetics of borneol of new Xing Nao Jing in rat plasma after intravenous(i.v.) and intranasal(i.n.) administration. Methods:Borneol was administered via i.v.at a dose of 12 mg·kg-1 and i.n.at a dose of 150 mg·kg-1,respectively.Blood was collected at predetermined intervals for the measurement of borneol concentrations by gas chromatography. The calculations of pharmacokinetic parameters were performed by compartmental analysis using Kinetica 4.4 software. Results:Borneol rapidly entered plasma after intranasal administration. The intranasal bioavailability was 83%.Conclusion:Borneol can be absorbed into the systemic circulation rapidly and completely after intranasal administration.Intranasal administration may be a promising alternative to intravenous administration for borneol.
