Using Simulation to Enhance Nurse Practitioner Students Cultural Sensitivity, Communication, and Empathy with Vulnerable Populations

2021
Abstract Background Hispanics in the United States are disproportionately impacted by disparities that negatively impact their health. This project sought to enhance cultural sensitivity, communication, and empathy in nurse practitioner (NP) students through a standardized patient (SP) simulation- based learning experience (SBLE). Methods A quasi-experimental design was used to evaluate the use of a SP-SBLE on NP student empathy, communication, and cultural competence. Results The SP-SBLE facilitated NP awareness, empathy, and readiness for practice with Hispanic patients with limited English proficiency. Conclusion This project provides support for the use of simulation as an effective strategy enhancing learning in NP programs.
