Summary 1. The mechanics of the production of oedema are outlined. 2. Oedema caused by lymphatic incompetence is defined and found to be due in some cases to obstruction and in others to hypoplasia of the system. 3. The surgical methods available are reviewed and the indications for their use are considered. 4. Present methods are inadequate to produce normality because of lack of knowledge of the basic pathology of the problem.
