The use of iron oxides for decorative cosmetics has a tradition of many years, especially as regards eye cosmetics (mascaras and eye liners) and products for the make-up. To begin with, natural deposits of iron oxides like sienna, ochre, Persian red or umber have been used. Later iron oxides were produced synthetically, which resulted in a significant reduction of heavy metal impurities, in a calculated influence on the particle size and in the achievement of a constant colour quality. When it became question of imparting to the cosmetics additionally the gloss mentime coming in fashion, preference was given to pearlgloss or decorative pigments
